Definition
Update authority lives on the Metaplex metadata account, not the mint. The holder can rename the token, change the ticker, update the logo, or edit creators. Legitimate for early bug fixes; harmful if kept active on a launched token.
Revoking update authority freezes metadata forever. Most serious projects revoke update authority once metadata is final. See /update-solana-token-metadata for how to change fields before revoking.
