Definition

A lamport is Solana's equivalent of a satoshi on Bitcoin: the smallest indivisible unit. One SOL equals exactly 1,000,000,000 lamports (1e9). Wallets and explorers display SOL for human readability, but on-chain everything is measured in lamports.

Named after Leslie Lamport, one of the pioneers of distributed systems research. When you see a transaction fee of ~5000 lamports, that is 0.000005 SOL.
